Book Buzz: Oprah biography, Meyer's 'Host' land on the list
Kitty Kelley's Oprah: A Biography makes its debut at No. 5, and the paperback edition of Stephenie Meyer's sci-fi novel enters at No. 23. Plus, authors honor Mark Twain on the 100th anniversary of his death.
Sales strong for Oprah bio: Oprah Winfrey, responsible for making dozens of books best sellers after touting them on her TV show, has made it to USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list. Celebrity biographer Kitty Kelley's Oprah: A Biography lands at No. 5. Kelley did 850 interviews over five years, talking to everyone from Winfrey's family to co-workers from her early years, touching on everything from her pregnancy at 15 to her affair with John Tesh. Kelley's The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty entered the list at No. 2 in September 2004. Her look at Britain's royal family, The Royals, was No. 1 in September 1997 and on the list for 21 weeks.
Meyer's 'Host' expands: Stephenie Meyer is best known for her Twilight series about teen vampires, but she also published The Host, a science-fiction novel, in 2008. More than two million hardcovers have sold. Just out in paperback, it enters the list at No. 23. First printing: 650,000 copies. Added bonus: a never-before-published chapter that focuses on Melanie, one of the book's main characters, whose body has been invaded by an alien "soul." In the new chapter, we hear what Melanie thinks about the soul that's invaded her body. "I'm kind of excited because I like getting to see Melanie when she's just Melanie again and Wanderer (the alien) isn't influencing her," says Meyer. The film has been optioned by the team that produced the film of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. No information has been released on the film's production.
Authors bet on Twain: Like Mark Twain himself, the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Conn., has had its financial ups and downs. After threatening to close two years ago, it's back in the black. On Wednesday, the 100th anniversary of Twain's death, the museum announced a major fundraiser that will feature best-selling authors John Grisham, David Baldacci and Jodi Picoult. All are big Twain admirers and will discuss his legacy and influence Sept. 22 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. Twain might be bemused by the location. He once wrote, "Baccarat is a game whereby the croupier gathers in money with a flexible sculling oar, then rakes it home. If I could have borrowed his oar I would have stayed."
